Rathaus

The Town Hall (Rathaus) is one of Vienna's main landmarks, attracting many tourists. It is located on Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz. The building was completed in 1883. The architect Schmidt was both the designer and the head of construction. The Town Hall houses the municipal offices and the office of the mayor. It is also where the sessions of the state parliament (Landtag) take place.

By the 19th century, many of Vienna’s suburbs had become part of the city, leading to an increase in population, and the old town hall no longer met the requirements of the capital.

In 1868, it was decided to build a new town hall, and a competition was announced, which Schmidt won. According to the original plan, the building was to be located near a Viennese park, but later the city authorities decided to allocate part of the Glacis area, where parades had previously been held, for the construction.

The Town Hall was built in an eclectic style, characteristic of many buildings of that period.

Take a look at the façade, and you will see an excellent example of a building in the Neo-Gothic style. The façade and the tower, which rises 105 meters above the city, are executed in the best traditions of Gothic architecture, while the courtyards give this Viennese landmark a resemblance to a Baroque palace.

The building occupies an impressive area of 113,000 m² and includes more than 1,500 halls.

When you visit the Town Hall, you can appreciate the beauty of sculptures by legendary authors. Some of its halls are reserved for exhibitions and other events. More than 800 events are held within the building’s walls each year.

The tower is crowned by a 3.5-meter statue of a guard.
